About
Houston Med Fest
The Mediterranean Festival sponsored by St. George Orthodox Church in Houston Texas was first established in the early 1980’s. The festival was created to showcase the culture and foods of the Mediterranean as well as our ancient Orthodox faith. The festival brought together the congregants of St. George to work together to build out the infrastructure on the church grounds as well as prepare and serve delicious foods from all over the Mediterranean. Countries represented were Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Serbia, Russia, Italy and Greece serving favorites like grape leaves, kibbie, perogies, kielbasa and sour kraut, pizza, sausage on a stick, gyros and much more. Also served were amazing sweets that were headlined with baklava, mamool, ice cream . . . For the next fifteen or so years, the parishioners of St. George served hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Over the years as the priorities and challenges of St. George evolved, the festival was put on pause. Fast forward to 2023 and we welcomed in our first Med Fest in over 15 years!
This year in 2024 much of the familiar foods of the past will be returning as well as some new options. We will be serving beef and chick kabobs, falafel, fries, gyro sandwiches, pizza, zaatar and cheese bread and hummus. We will also serve delicious sweets to include baklava, anise cookies, ice cream and baklava sundaes. We will have beer, wine, soda and water. There will also be a Mediterranean market place with vendors selling their crafts, a silent auction where folks can bid on a wide variety of items. For our younger guests we will have a petting zoo, face painting and balloon artists!
We are excited to Bring this festival back to our Houston neighbors and show off Orthodoxy as well as our Mediterranean culture and food. We look forward to seeing you all on October 26th!
